Samaná Bay, Dominican Republic – A sightseeing catamaran carrying approximately 55 passengers from the TUI Cruises ship Mein Schiff 1 sank rapidly in Samaná Bay on Sunday, November 9, 2025, prompting a swift rescue operation involving the Dominican Republic Navy and nearby vessels. All passengers and crew were brought to safety, with only minor injuries reported.

The 40-foot catamaran, identified as the Boca de Yuma I, was on a cruise excursion when it began taking on water due to an “internal failure” and a collision with an object in the water. The vessel sank within minutes of the incident, forcing passengers into the sea. Fortunately, safety protocols, including the use of life vests, were implemented, and all individuals on board were accounted for.

Rapid Rescue Operation

The Dominican Republic Navy was alerted to the emergency and responded promptly, coordinating a multi-vessel rescue effort. Communication support, logistical aid, and operational assistance were provided by naval units to ensure the safe transfer of passengers from the water to nearby boats and eventually back to the cruise ship, Mein Schiff 1. Local residents from the community of El Crucero also contributed to the rescue efforts.

Video footage shared on social media depicted a scene of floating life rings and passengers spread across a large area of the bay, with only a small portion of the catamaran visible above the surface before it submerged completely. While the experience was described as frightening by some passengers, no major injuries were reported, though a few individuals sustained minor wounds.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the catamaran’s sinking is currently under investigation by the Dominican Republic Navy and local authorities. Preliminary reports suggest a combination of an “internal failure” and a collision with an underwater object led to the rapid flooding and sinking. The vessel, with a capacity for up to 80 guests, was on a sightseeing tour, not a diving or snorkeling expedition.

The Captaincy of the Port of Samaná has initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause, identify responsibilities, and implement preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future. TUI Cruises, the operator of the Mein Schiff 1, confirmed that all affected guests were offered pastoral care and compensation, and they have chosen to continue their cruise vacation. The cruise ship continued its 14-day Caribbean itinerary as planned.

This incident highlights the critical importance of maritime safety regulations for excursion operators in popular tourist destinations. As the investigation progresses, findings will be crucial for enhancing safety standards across the Caribbean tourism business and ensuring the well-being of travelers on excursion activities. This news underscores the ongoing need for vigilance in marine operations to prevent future tragedies.
