Guyana’s young track and field stars, Tianna Springer and Malachi Austin, are making significant waves on the international scene, cementing their positions among the world’s elite Under-20 400m athletes. Recent rankings from World Athletics highlight their exceptional talent and impressive performances this season. Springer, an 18-year-old representing the University of Georgia, currently holds the second-fastest U20 women’s 400m time globally with a blistering 52.31 seconds, achieved in February. This puts her just behind Nigeria’s Chioma Nwachukwu, who leads with 51.67 seconds. Springer’s transition from regional success at the CARIFTA Games to the highly competitive NCAA Division One circuit is a testament to her dedication and talent. As she prepares to defend her unbeaten streak at the upcoming CARIFTA Games in Grenada, expectations are high for her to lead Guyana’s charge.

On the men’s side, Malachi Austin, a freshman at Louisiana State University, has firmly established himself among the top U20 male 400m athletes. His personal best of 45.37 seconds, set at the LSU Opener, not only secured him a victory but also shattered the South American U20 record. This remarkable time places him among the world’s top five U20 athletes in the event, running in elite company. Significantly, Austin’s 45.37 seconds also ranks him 25th globally among all senior 400m athletes, underscoring the magnitude of his achievement at such a young age. His outstanding performance earned him the SEC Runner of the Week accolade from the Southeastern Conference. Austin has a proven track record on the regional stage, with CARIFTA Games U20 gold and silver medals, and a silver medal from the Youth Commonwealth Games, solidifying his status as one of Guyana’s brightest sprint prospects.

Adding to Guyana’s growing reputation in sprinting is Athaleyha Hinckson, also competing for LSU. Hinckson’s 7.16 seconds in the 60m ranks as the third-fastest U20 time globally this season and is the fastest ever recorded by a South American U20 athlete. Her versatility is further demonstrated by her 23.46 seconds in the 200m, placing her 13th in the world in the U20 category. All three athletes—Springer, Austin, and Hinckson—are poised to spearhead Guyana’s campaign at the upcoming CARIFTA Games, having been named in a 24-member squad by the Athletics Association of Guyana.
